Links from Last Week 10

29 December 2015
The Plain Team
It is hard to believe we have published the Links from Last Week blog series for 10 weeks now. Sharing this with you all each week is now a solid part of our weekly workflow here at Plain. We appreciate each one of you and hope you enjoy this week’s links.

Some cool things we’ve been up to here at Plain:

Unboxing a Kangaroo for Windows Testing - We picked up a Kangaroo device for testing our work on Windows 10 & documented the process. So far, so good. Priced at only $99, we may pick up a few more for other uses.

Update on our favorite bookmarking tool: Unmark - It’s a favorite because, actually, we built it.

And some cool things from around the web:

Big 4 Ice Caves Michael Matti Photographer

Photo: Big 4 Ice Caves exploration series by adventure photographer, Michael Matti. His timelapse films on his Vimeo channel are equally awe-inspiring.

26 Tech Documentaries Worth Watching - Compiled by James McNab, this list of must-see films will definitely help you procrastinate during this last week of 2015.

World’s First Flying R2D2 Drone Quadcopter - This YouTube video is dramatic, entertaining, and amazing. A flying R2D2. Donny, Craig, Paul, and Lauren all collaborated to pull this off.

How BB-8 Works - TechCrunch’s report on the mechanics and physics behind BB-8 is one of the best we’ve run across. Thanks to Nitish Kulkarni for this very comprehensive writeup, including images from the patents filed in association with the design and development of BB-8.

Back to the Future Christmas Light Show - Down in Austin, TX, Aaron Dennington has pulled off what we, here at Plain, consider to be the most amazing display of Christmas lights. If you remember this event we hosted at Coalwork in October, you know why! Be sure to check out all of his videos; his dedication to detail is noteworthy.

DIY Netflix Socks - “Netflix socks detect when you’ve dozed off and send a signal to your TV, automatically pausing your show.” Yes. You read that right. Netflix socks. This project offers 17 different designs, a detailed spec list, and clear step-by-step directions.

Adidas’ 3D Printed Shoe Sole Made from Ocean Plastic - Adidas, in partnership with Parley for the Oceans, has revealed a “…concept shoe [that] consists of an upper made with ocean plastic content and a midsole which is 3D printed using recycled polyamide and gill net content…” which we think is pretty cool.
